Can I lower my cholesterol with natural pharmaceuticals? PDF Print E-mail

Yes, Natural products like Red Yeast Rice, Phytosterols, policosanols, Omega3, Probiotics, guggullipids,  etc. have been shown to lower bad Cholesterol levels and raise good cholesterol levels.

Diet, exercise and smoking cessation are important parts of maintaining proper cholesterol and blood pressure levels.  However, even if you have a perfect diet, exercise three or four times a week and don’t smoke, hereditary factors may cause you to have elevated cholesterol and blood pressure levels.  A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded, non-smokers, 30% above their ideal weight, with normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels have no increased risk from heart disease and stroke.  These results are very promising.

The scientific literature is full of studies documenting the dangers of Lipitor®, Zocor®, Prevacor®, Crestor® or the ill fated Dacol® (the statin family of cholesterol lowering pharmaceuticals).  Homefirst® Cholesterol Health is a blend of four natural substances that have scientific documentation which shows that they have been known to lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), lower triglycerides and raise HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) in a safe and effective manner.

Phytosterols

Simons, et al., The American Journal of Cardiology, October 2002, concluded that in subjects with primary Hypercholesterolemia, statin and phytosterol used together produce a purely additive effect on LDL cholesterol reduction.  The addition of phytosterol therapy offers LDL cholesterol reduction equivalent to doubling the dose of statins.

Policosanols

Gouni-Berthold, et al., in The American Heart Journal 2002, Policosanol: "Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutic Significance of a new cholesterol- lowering agent," concluded that policosanol seems to be a very promising phytochemical isolated from sugar cane wax.  It is an alternative to lipid lowering agents such as statins and deserve further evaluation.  The mixture has been shown to lower cholesterol in animal models.  At doses of 10-20 mg. per day, policosanol lowers total cholesterol by 17-21%, LDL cholesterol (bad) by 21-29% and raises HDL cholesterol (good) by 8-15%.

Red Rice Yeast

Miller, et al., The American Heart Journal, March 2004 "Complimentary and alternative medicine cardiovascular disease: a review of biologically safe approaches." reported that in the preliminary report of a multi-centered study of 187 subjects, presented at the 39th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention in Orlando, Florida in 1999, red rice yeast lowered total cholesterol level 16.4%, LDL level 21%, triglyceride levels 24.5%, and increased HDL cholesterol 14.6%.

Guggullipids

Miller, et al., The American Heart Journal, March 2004 "Complimentary and alternative medicine cardiovascular disease: a review of biologically safe approaches." reported that Guggul is derived from the mukul myrrh tree in India.  It has played a role in traditional Indian medicine for thousands of years and is used in treated arthritis, digestive, skin, and menstrual problems.  Today, guggul is used a a lipid lowering agent.  In a small randomized, double blinded placebo controlled trial, guggullipids decrease total cholesterol level 11.7%; LDL 12.5%; trigylceride levels 12%; levels were unchanged in the placebo group.

The Homefirst Cholesterol Health natural pharmaceutical is a synergistic combination of the above ingredients.
