| ACE | Angiotensin Converting Enzyme
|
| | |
| ACE Inhibitors | Ace (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) Inhibitors Block an enzyme in the body that is responsible for causing the blood vessels to narrow. If the blood vessels are relaxed, your blood pressure is lowered and more oxygen-rich blood can reach your heart.
They lower the amount of salt and water in your body, which also helps to lower your blood pressure, i.e., Accupril® (quinapril), Aceon® (perindopril), Altace® (ramipril), Capoten® (captopril), Lotensin® (benazepril), Mavik® (trandolapril), Monopril® (fosinopril), Prinivil® (lisinopril), Univasc® (moexipril), Vasotec® (enalaprilat, enalapril), Zestril® (lisinopril).

| Antioxidant | Any of various substances (as beta-carotene, vitamin C, and alpha-tocopherol) that inhibit oxidation or reactions promoted by oxygen and peroxides and that include many molecules held to protect the living body from the deleterious effects of free radicals.
|
| | |
| Apoenzyme | A protein that forms an active enzyme system in combination with a coenzyme and determines the specificity of this system for a substrate.

| Apoptosis | Programmed cell death as signaled by the nuclei in normally functioning human and animal cells when age or state of cell health and condition dictates.
Cells that die by apoptosis do not usually elicit the inflammatory responses that are associated with necrosis, though the reasons are not clear.
Cancerous cells, however, are unable to experience the normal cell transduction or apoptosis-driven natural cell death process.
